Cometh the hour, cometh the men! Players 5 vs Buxton 4

The 5th Team haven’t won away all season and so the long trip to Buxton today didn’t bode well, with the opposition sitting two places above us in the league. Add to that the fact that we had just 9 players against their squad of 14, and it looked a forlorn hope.

But cometh the hour, cometh the men! Our team may have included four U18s, but there were no juniors playing today. We finished the day with a 1-0 win, our first clean sheet and first away win of the season!

We weathered some early pressure and some heart-stopping moments within the D but then grew in confidence, and over time grew to exploit the extra space. Matthew Shipway taunted them down our right and Isaac Green on the left, linking well with Ryan Sanders in the middle. Mike Brooks did the work of two men in midfield working with Alex – leaving the Nettleton duo (David & Matthew) as the last line of defence.

Nick Pearce had a short-corner ricochet off the post, but buried another for a top goal. At the other end, Julian used the full extent of his limited repertoire to keep his first ever clean sheet.

Ryan was the runaway winner of MOTM. Mike was the clear favourite as DOTD for appearing to cavort with an opponent on the floor (in what they claimed was a tackle), as if Valentine’s Day had come a day early!
